Qusay Awad is an independent architect and multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin. Using spatial design, sound, moving image, and performance, Awad's visionary work explores and connects ideas of historical rupture, memory, displacement, and community.
Dhia Douss, a sound artist from Ksar Hellal, Tunisia, blends contemporary music with his spiritual roots. His engineering studies sparked a passion for modular synthesizers, shaping his desired aesthetic for analog sound synthesis in an acoustic context.
Meeting in Berlin, they discovered a shared interest in soundscapes and installations inspired by their backgrounds and exile experiences. "Above our Waters," launched in 2023, merges their visions through interdisciplinary cooperation.
"Above Our Waters” is a multimedia A/V live performance and an ongoing research and event series by Dhia Douss and Qusay Awad. It explores the shared waters of the Mediterranean Sea, their myths, and the lives of fishers. Combining modular synthesizers with field recordings and video installations, the Berlin-based artists create an immersive environment that evokes fluid, multidisciplinary storytelling while unveiling layers that transcend cultural heritage. In doing so, they develop a new language that delves into the personal, fictional, and metaphorical depths of water.
Their connection was further deepened by a broader geographical bond—the Mediterranean Sea. Dhia grew up on the coast of Tunisia, while Qusay, hailing from the mountains of southern Syria, first learned to swim at the Syrian Mediterranean coast. These conversations spanned the sea, its secrets, migration, the colonization of the Mediterranean waters, belonging to these waters, and the collective identity. The project aims to create a new research and imaginative space that opens up new narratives related to the Mediterranean.
